The Ambassador in Great Britain (Kellogg) to the Secretary of State

502. Department’s 434, November 24, 6 p.m., was informally brought to Mr. Chamberlain’s49 attention through the Foreign Office and Waterlow50 advises today as follows: Mr. Chamberlain very much appreciates the Secretary’s frank statement of his views on, the Chinese situation with which he is in absolute accord and has instructed the Foreign Office to continue informal discussions of views and information with the Embassy.

Foreign Office states it will in the near future take occasion to express to the French similar views to those in the last paragraph of Department’s 439 of November 26, 3 p.m.51 British Minister in Peking has already urged upon Tuan an early compromise with French toward gold payments of Boxer Indemnity.
