Sir: Referring to my No. 400, concerning the proposed emigration of the widow Olivier and her young children, I have the honor to inclose herewith copies of a further correspondence between the council of Bourgeoisie of Neuveville and this legation.

Council of Bourgeoisie of Neuveville to Mr. Fish.

Neuveville, July 25, 1881.

Sir: Concerning the emigration of the woman Olivier and her children, about whom we had the honor to write you on the 26th of April last, and to which you had the kindness to reply, we take the liberty to submit to you the inclosed declaration asking you to inform us whether, upon the production of this document, the authorities [Page 1167] of New York will create difficulties to permit said woman to continue her journey to her destination.

You will excuse us, sir, hut desiring to allay the difficulties which might arise concerning this family, we desire to he informed on this point.

In begging you to accept our thanks in advance, we tender you the assurance of our distinguished consideration.

Gentlemen: Your letter of 25th instant, inclosing a document relative to the widow Mrs. Maria Olivier and her children, is received.

This legation cannot undertake to say what view the authorities at New York may take as to the sufficiency of the document in question, and in no event can the legation assure you that the widow and her children will be exempt from the customary examination on landing in the United States.

The facts of the case, as set forth in the previous correspondence, have been made known to the emigration authorities.
