Legislation

The National Archive Act of 1990 prescribed standards for public accessibility of Malta’s government archives. Records are closed for 30 years, following which most records are open for public inspection. Records from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are sent to the National Archives for release after 30 years. Under special circumstances, researchers may gain approval to view documents under the age of 30.

Procedures

Researchers may visit the Archives and access the reading room with a passport or national ID card. The reading room has finding aids and forms to request documents.
